Burnham on Sea U3A

Strollers

Strollers 1

This is mainly a social group, but it has the advantage of allowing those who take part to get exercise.

It is also good for those people on their own and who do not have transport to be able to enjoy the countryside.

We cover a very wide area and walk anything from 1 to 3 miles.

In the winter we walk in the mornings and finish with a pub lunch.

In the summer we walk in the afternoon and generally have a picnic. Remember that we will meet in the afternoons at 1.15 pm at the Community Centre starting on April 3rd .

Meetings: Outings start from the Community Centre on Saturday mornings (winter) or afternoons (summer) throughout the year.

Group Leader: Margaret Budden.

GRANNY TRECK 2009

Strollers 1 again took part in the Granny Trek in aid of the Children’s Hospice (South West). 14 of us arrived at the hospice just before 10 am on Sunday 26 April. Already there were lots of people there already starting their walks.

We had the choice of a 1 mile walk, a 3 mile walk or a 6 mile walk. 3 of our brave souls chose the 6 mile walk, 7 did the 3 mile walk and the rest did the 1 mile walk. It was a lovely day for walking, not sunny, a gentle breeze and cool.

Our 3 mile walk took us first of all through some woods where there was a very heady smell of garlic, but it soon turned into carpets of bluebells, as far as you could see. We kept gasping at the beautiful sight. Most of the walk was through these woods. We had to negotiate a few stiles, but we managed these with a bit of help.

After about 1¾ hours we arrived back at the starting point for a welcome cup of tea and a piece of cake and we were rewarded with a certificate each with our names on to prove that we had done it. Neil, one of the 6 mile walkers arrived back at the same time as we did!! and the other 2 arrived about an hour later having had a stop for lunch.

Apparently over 600 people took part. We do not yet know how much money was raised, but we thoroughly enjoyed our outing and we are looking forward to doing it again next year.

Strollers 2 - Now known as Easy Walking

The aims of this group are to explore our lovely Somerset countryside in the company of like-minded colleagues; and afterwards to enjoy a convivial lunch together.

Walks are generally 2 – 3 miles in length, of easy gradient and within ½ hour’s drive of Burnham.

Lunch is taken at a pub close to the route of the walk and forms an important part of the agenda so that members` education about good-places-to-eat locally is being extended week-by-week.

Members take turns to choose and lead the walks so that we frequently explore new locations and pubs. Attendance varies between 10 – 20. We can boast that we are rained on only once a year on average but can’t predict which day that will be!!

Meetings: 9.45am on 2nd and 4th Wednesdays at the Community Centre throughout the year, generally returning by 200pm

Harvey is feeling out-numbered.

He could do with a few more men to join the strollers' group.

Any offers out there?
